Satire: NBC Cancels CSI

Thanks to Jessica for the following heads-up!

I don’t know if you’re familiar with The Onion, but it’s a newspaper of totally made up news items. Anyway, there was this little blurb in it (that mentions Alias), which I found amusing. It’s nice to know that they consider Alias to be ABC’s top show. :)

BURBANK, CA—Seeking to bolster its Thursday-night Nielsen numbers, NBC announced Monday that it is cancelling the highly rated CBS drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. "CSI was a quality show that, unfortunately, always quite lived up to expectations," said Jeff Zucker, NBC president of entertainment. "We tried to give it plenty of time to lose an audience, but in the end, it just was working." Other shows NBC may cancel include Fox's American Idol, ABC's Alias, and CBS's Everybody Loves Raymond.

Jane

April 2003

Thanks to jennem, Vartan Ho #1396, for the transcript.

In the April "Jane" magazine, there's an interview with Seann William Scott of "Dude, Where's My Car?" Here's the relevant bit:

Are you dating anyone?
No. You have to help me out with that one. Write something really cool about me in your article.

Why aren't you?
I'm pretty picky. And I'm also a workaholic. I think I just need to take a break and go out a little more. But it's kind of hard to meet good girls in LA.

What qualities do you consider good?
Just being nice and real and funny. You know who I thought was a really good girl? Jennifer Garner. She was really sweet, really smart and gracious to everybody. That impressed me. It's kind of a rare quality out here. Of course, she's married.

And inside the back cover, in the Peep Show section:

"Jon Favreau's IFC show, Dinner for Five, was created so guests (like Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Garner) can be "honest and real." Translation: famous people getting drunk and bitchy."

Producers bowling for budgets

Thanks to Jinnie!

The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, at the Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Beverly Hills, Calif., asked fellow panelist J.J. Abrams how he finishes effects-laden Alias episodes on time and within budget, while West Wing is always late and over budget and they just have people standing around debating the estate tax. "You have people kick-boxing on disintegrating planes," Mr. Sorkin said. Mr. Abrams copped to having a great stock footage house to help the show stay close to budget but said he got depressed after talking to his friend Rob Burnett, producer of NBC's Ed. Turns out it cost more money to make an episode of Ed than Alias. "I was like Ed?!" Mr. Abrams said. "It's a bowling alley! How much do you pay those pins?"

Pass the butt kicking Baton

Jennifer Garner is in the March 10th issue of TIME, on page 72 in the People Section.

Thanks to Jennie for the transcript.

One suspects that if Jennifer Garner's character in Daredevil had worn a turtle neck and baggy jeans, we might have seen the end of her, but the leather-clad Elektra is getting her own spinoff. The already announced sequel is no surprise: Daredevil made $45 million in its opening weekend. But news of Elektra's spinoff is more of a shock. Not to give any of it away, but her health seemed somewhat less than robust at the end of the film.

People

March 10, 2003

Thanks to Alias Fanatic at TWOP.

According to the new People magazine (3/10/03):

"What will Minnie say? Come Oscar night, we hear, Jennifer Garner will join an animated Mickey Mouse to present the Oscar for best animated short film and best live-action short, while her red-carpet partner will be hubby Scott Foley. What's Garner wearing? She's still shopping, but it won't be a polka-dot dress and white gloves."

The picture of JG has the caption: "M-I-C ... see you at the Academy Awards!"

Anyone who has sky tv, and gets the magazine with it there's a BIG guide to Alias, and interview with Jennifer and quotes from Michael and Victor.

Michael Vartan recalls how the teetering heels worn by Jennifer Garner brought filming to an abrupt halt. "We were running down a corridor, and just as we were supposed to split, we went flying and they had to stop filming for 20 minutes because we were laughing so hard."

"She's kissing Leo DiCaprio, she's kissing Ben Afleck, she's doing alright. I just think what a letdown it's going to be for her if she has to kiss me. If she calls me Ben in our kissing scene, I'm going to flip." - MV

Jennifer Garner "Elektra-Fied" by Daredevil's Debut

Jennifer Garner knows a thing or two about setting records. Over the Presidents' Day weekend, Daredevil grossed more than $45 million at the box office, second only to Hannibal for a February opening. Access Hollywood was on location at an ice skating rink as Jennifer taped an upcoming episode of Alias. Her character, Sydney Bristow, takes to the ice with sexy love interest Vaughan (Michael Vartan). Jennifer told our own Tony Potts that she was "elektra-fied" over her box office smash!

When asked about the weekend's success, Jennifer joked: "Yeah, a little movie opened up. A little indie flick called Daredevil. How great was that?"

While Jennifer was busy hosting Saturday Night Live, Daredevil was going wild at the box office. After the SNL gig, Jennifer returned to Los Angeles and laced up for her first day back on the set of her hit ABC show. Upon her return, she got some ribbing from Vartan and the crew over her newly-cemented 'movie star' status.

"She's impossible on set, but I fear now that it's going to get unbearable. I don't know what we're going to do," joked Vartan.

Alias airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC. And catch Jennifer right now on the big screen in Daredevil!

TV Gal Gets Face Time with Television's Top Newcomers

by Amy Amatangelo

[...]

Honestly, how fun is it having Vaughn (who is looking pretty fly these days) and Sydney going on all these undercover missions on "Alias" (ABC, 9 p.m. Sunday)? The show has enough going for it that Sydney and Vaughn should be allowed to be happy for at least a little while. That's going to be tough considering that this week, Sydney has been kidnapped by Sloane.

Daredevil Premiere

Interviews with Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, Stan Lee and more

A few people showed up on the streets of Westwood and some minor celebrities walked down a red carpet for the Daredevil premiere. If you can't tell that's sarcasm, then I'm really not much of a writer. The premiere was huge. Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, their significant others and more guests signed autographs for sidewalks full of fans before talking to us about the superhero film.

Jennifer Garner was most generous with her time. Between the film and Alias, she's an action journalist's dream, and hearing her speak so down-to-earth-ly about her work was refreshing.

Did you ever see yourself as an action hero?
No, but I'm thrilled. It's been the most fun addition to my career, so I'm thrilled.

What do you hope young girls get out of watching you do these things?
Well, I hope that they see that these women choose brain over brawn first of all, but that they can take care of themselves and that they don't need a man to make them anything. The women that I am known for playing, Sydney Bristow and Elektra, are both completely capable and at the same time, not afraid of their own femininity.

Do you wear your Elektra costume around the house?
Absolutely not.

What did you like about playing her?
She is driven by vengeance and she's a very dark woman, but the great thing about this movie is that it starts with her falling in love. What was fun about playing her was that I got to play both the tenderness and the blissfulness of falling in love and also her vengeful darker side.

Roush Rave

The Super Bowl game didn't live up to the hype. But the spectacular Alias episode that followed exceeded expecations, brimming with action, surprise and enough pivotal events to pretty much reinvent the show: The takedown of SD-6. The revelation that evil Sloane (Ron Rifkin) masterminded it all. The long-awaited kiss between Sydney (Jennifer Garner) and Vaughn (Michael Vartan). The murder of Syd's pal Francie (Merrin Dungey), replaced by a double. Wow. But a Rant- within-a-Rave to ABC's woefully bloated postgame, delaying Alias's start until 11:01 P.M./ET. A blown opportunity for a show that deserved a better break.

Jennifer Garner

The toughest girl on TV is taking charge on the big screen, going blow-for-blow with Ben Affleck and Colin Farrell in the new action thriller, "Daredevil." Jennifer says, "There's nothing like being bad"

It’s a role on the opposite end of her day job, where Jennifer stars as the sexy good girl. "Alias" got a huge boost by running enticing promos during the Super Bowl, exposing a high dose of Jen-appeal. She says, "I'm so glad I did not see those ads. I would've just crawled under my bed and stayed there."

Jen and co-star Michael Vartan finally got to kiss, giving "Alias" fans a killer buzz. Jennifer says, "You can only string it along before it stops being believable. Even Michael and I, during scenes, would be like, 'Oh come on, let us kiss.'"

But off screen, Jen's lips are reserved for one guy only, husband Scott Foley. He is going from "Felicity" to starring in NBC's new sitcom, "A.U.S.A." Jennifer says, "The reason I fell in love with him, or one of the reasons, is cause he's so funny. I can't wait for the world to see how funny my man is."
