Garner Going on 30
Alias star Jennifer Garner told SCI FI Wire that she's going to have to get in touch with her inner adolescent to star in the upcoming fantasy film 13 Going on 30 next summer. "I play this young woman who at 13 suddenly fast-forwards to 30 physically, and ... the rest of her family has fast-forwarded that far ahead, [too,] but emotionally she's still where she is at her 13th birthday," Garner said in an interview while promoting her next film, Daredevil.
Garner, 32, said that she's still in touch with her 13-year-old side. "I think so," she said. "Everyone in the Alias cast is like, 'Oh, yeah, this is a no-brainer. She's 13 all right. She may be 12.'"
Garner added, "I'm so excited. I'm really nervous. But it feels closer to me character-wise than anything I have really played so far. It's ... the female version of Big. But it's a movie with a lot of heart, and it should be funny. And Mark Ruffalo is going to star in it with me. And it's at Revolution Studios, and Gary Winick is going to direct it, and it's going to be great." 13 Going on 30 is slated for a 2004 release; Daredevil, in which Garner plays Elektra opposite Ben Affleck's Matt Murdock, opens Feb. 14.

Critic's Corner
By Robert Bianco
Michelle let us know that USAToday.com's Robert Bianco, who selects the best of what's on TV each week in "Critic's Corner," chose "Alias" as one of the shows to watch. There's also a dig at ABC in there for shooting itself in the foot with all the Super Bowl post-game coverage. Here's what he said: "Ethan Hawke guests on Alias (ABC, Sunday, 9 p.m. ET/PT) as a CIA agent who may not be all that he appears. Happily, it appears that the show's fabulous post-Super Bowl episode introduced this incredibly entertaining series to a host of new viewers -- though it might have reached even more had ABC and the NFL, in their combined greed and stupidity, not stretched the postgame out past all endurance." Sing it, Robert.

Few Commercials Stand Out in Annual Super Blitz
By Mark McGuire
Some other random observations:
- "Alias" star Jennifer Garner is hot. Very hot. In lingerie. In a
bikini. Hot.
And she was everywhere. In fact, between all the sultry "Alias"
commercials, as well as the butt-jiggling spots for the insulting
reality show "Are You Hot?", ABC could have charged $6.95 for a four-
hour block and changed its name to the Adult Booty Channel.

The Ad Bowl: 89 Million Watch Super Sales Pitches
By Lisa de Moraes
Meanwhile, ABC's chick drama "Alias," which got the coveted post-
Super Bowl time slot, may have copped its biggest audience ever --
17.4 million viewers -- but that's the smallest audience for a post-
Super Bowl show since at least the early '90s. Last year, Fox's
broadcast of "Malcolm in the Middle" nabbed 21.5 million viewers; in
2001 the debut of "Survivor: Whatever" clocked a whopping 45.4
million.
Maybe that's because "Alias" had the latest start ever for a post-
Super Bowl show: 11 p.m. Two years ago, CBS began its post-
bowl "Survivor" broadcast at 10:17 p.m., as God intended. It was over
a little after 11 -- right around the time "Alias" was just revving
up this past Sunday.
It's not like the game ran long; play ended at 10:18 p.m. But ABC
delayed "Alias" to run a Bon Jovi "concert" -- did you notice there
was no one in the stands while Mr. Jovi was singing, and if Bon Jovi
sings but only cheerleaders are listening, did Bon Jovi actually
sing? -- and the traditional Post-Super Bowl Thick-Necked Guys
Blatherathon.
Bad idea.

Former actress not Blue about career choices
By Tom Jicha
Thanks to Whoosh! :)
...
A no-compete clause in [Andrea Thompson's] contract will keep her from working in news until July, but she has not lost sight of her goal. She could have gone immediately back to acting, she says. "As soon as word got out I was leaving CNN, I received a couple of compelling offers." One of them, she says, was as the mother of Jennifer Garner on Alias, a part that wound up going to Lena Olin.

CELEB DISH: Jennifer Garner Swaps Spit with Leo
The Alias star kisses and tells about her onscreen encounter in
Catch Me If You Can.
By ANNE MARIE CRUZ
Thanks to Whoosh! :)
Jennifer Garner says she didn't learn anything new while playing
tonsil hockey with Leo.
As far as Alias star Jennifer Garner is concerned, her one day on
the set of Catch Me If You Can was a buss-man's holiday: She spent
the entire time making out with Leonardo DiCaprio. "It was magical,"
says Garner, 30, who plays a call girl hired by DiCaprio's con
man. "We kissed a whole lot. It was only uncomfortable for the first
couple of minutes. Then you're just going for it, slobbering all
over each other and saying, 'Oh, you have something in your teeth.'
I went through a couple of tins of breath mints." Did Garner, who is
married to actor Scott Foley, learn any minty-fresh moves? Says
Garner with a smile: "Nothing I didn't already know."

Top TV of 2002
by Sarah Kuhn
...here's my list of the top TV from 2002.
1. Alias: Yes, Alias has an abundance of cool-ass genre stuff — explosions and gadgets and Roger Moore cameos — but at its core, it's a thoughtful exploration of the delicate ticks that comprise the human heart. (And if you think that sentence's pretentious, just wait 'til you read the rest of this!) This became especially apparent in the excellent-thus-far season 2, which hit the ground running, and continues to do so as nimbly as Sydney Bristow in a pair of spike heels. Most importantly, the already rich family dynamic between Sydney and Papa Jack has been complicated even further by the genius addition of gorgeous Lena Olin as the duplicitous Mama Bristow, whose allegiances remain a mystery. Also, in what is perhaps the show's most amazing feat to date, the formerly annoying character of Will has morphed into a fairly likable human being.

News Release
by Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
REVISITING: For "Alias" co-star Carl Lumbly, the chance to star in
the retelling of "Sounder," one of his favorite childhood films, was
something of a personal triumph. Declares Lumbly, "I'm proud to be
part of a movie about a black family you could really feel emotion
for."
According to Lumbly, the retelling of the 1972 film classic is
different this time around, "because Kevin Hooks (the film's
director) went back to the book instead of the original film."
Paul Winfield, who earned a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for
playing the father role in the original, also stars in the remake, in
the role of Teacher. "Sounder," which also stars Suzzanne Douglas and
newcomer Daniel Lee Robertson III, airs on ABC Sunday (1/19).

Acclaim Divulges 2003 Game List
by Fennec Fox
Thanks to caia1970 at Television Without Pity!
...Looking down the rest of the list, we can see that something called
Alias is coming out for all three consoles and the PC in the second
half of 2003. This game is actually based on Alias, the ABC-TV spy
drama that certain parts of America are going nuts about. ...
In any case, here's the complete 2003 release list Acclaim sent off
this morning.

Golden Globes 2003: We Predict
Many thanks to Christine, V. Ho # 897.
Best Actress, Drama
the contenders
Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Jennifer Garner*, Alias
Rachel Griffiths, Six Feet Under
Marg Helgenberger, CSI
Allison Janney, The West Wing
we predict
Jennifer Garner: Welcome to the hottest TV battle of the night. This year, Griffiths and Janney both moved from the supporting to lead category to take on last year's champ, Garner. With Globes voters lukewarm to The Sopranos, CSI and The West Wing, expect this to be a knock-down, drag-out fight between Garner and Griffiths. While Garner has slightly stronger star power (name a magazine whose cover she hasn't been) and also carries her show, Griffiths straddles the supporting/lead line. Expect Alias' spy girl to judo-chop the competition.

Five-Star Scribes (Times Five)
by John Griffiths
Many thanks to Vlada.
J.J. Abrams
Why He's Hot: Thanks to the ingenious, gung-ho Abrams (and star Jennifer Garner), the unthinkable happened a retro-hip spy show, ABC's Alias, is karate-chopping its way into a second season. Abrams is also writing the latest go at Superman at Warner Brothers.
Backstory: The L.A. kids wrote the big-screen weepy Regarding Henry at twenty-two and sailed from there. Now that his other, very different hit Felicity is gone, he's got more breathing room on Alias -- and more time to think about his next stop ("I'm dying to do a half-hour comedy").
Off the Page: Another bonus more time "to be a human and see my wife and kids."
Soundbite: "Mounting an ambitious production every week, where we've created a whole new world, has been more unpredictable than anything I've ever worked on. It's been the ultimate grad school."

Smartest Network Decision
Joanne Weintraub (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) NBC's summer reality dreck, whose success is depressing, and Fox's and ABC's decisions to give a second chance to 24 and Alias, which is refreshing.
